Clash of the Titans 6
Written by J.R. Gordon

No Mercy Extreme fighting and the Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz joined forces again to bring Colorado fight fans the sixth installment of their Clash of the Titans series.  The card played out at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and featured three title matches.

Main event: Matt Cox faced Tambora Gerl for the Clash of the Titans 170 lb. title.  Both fighters came out with strong striking before Gerl initiated the takedown.  Cox was able to control the fall and landed in half mount, then transitioned to full mount and worked GNP.  Gerl rolled away from the strikes and the rest of the round played out with Cox having back control and working GNP and submission attempts while Gerl was busy defending.  Cox went for the takedown early in round two but Gerl landed in his guard and the rest of the round was Cox threatening with submissions off of his back while Gerl worked between controlling position and strong GNP.  Round three saw Cox  a double leg takedown, but while looking to transition from half mount to full mount Gerl scored a sweep and spent the rest of the round on top working his GNP while Cox stayed active working for submissions.  When the bout was scored it was a title winning unanimous decision in favor of Tambora Gerl.

Abe Avarado faced Matt Manzanares for the Clash of the Titans 135 lb. title.  Avarado got a duck under double leg takedown to land in the guard of Manzanares who quickly set in an armbar.  Avarado twice slammed his opponent to escape the submission.  Manzanares continued with the submission attempts off of his back and  2:00 of round one he got an armbar sunk in for the title winning submission victory.

EJ Howe faced Travis Hollis.  Howe scored a fast takedown and missed the guillotine choke he was trying to set in.  Off of his back Howe continued to look for submissions and he set in a tight head and arm triangle.  Hollis stayed calm, escaped, postured up to start his GNP attack and he didn't stop the flurry until the referee stopped the bout giving Hollis the TKO win at 1:32 of round one.

Isiah Gomez faced Paul Fatta. Both fighters started with accurate head punches before Fatta got the takedown.  On the mat he worked between GNP, positional improvement and submission attempts until the round ended.  Round two saw Fatta get a takedown and transition to back control.  Gomez stood to try to slam Fatta to shake him off, but Fatta held tight and transitioned from an armbar to an omoplata.  Gomez did not tap to the submission, but the referee stopped the bout in the interest of fighter safety and the TKO win went to Fatta by way of TKO at 2:40 of round two.

Michael faced Josh Cole. Mathews pressed forward early, but Cole got a fast single leg takedown into side control, transitioned into full mount, set in a Kimura and got the tapout victory at :50 of round one.

Sean Law faced Darren Herrera.  Both fighters came to the center of the cage and exchanged punches and it was a flush punch from Herrera that knocked Law backward and to the mat.  Herrera followed him down for GNP and Law tapped out from the strikes after suffering an eye injury giving the TKO win to Herrera at :44 of round one.

Matt Guiterrez faced Nathan Gates.  Guiterrez trapped a kick and used it to score a takedown.  The rest of the round was Guiterrez on top working to improve his position and work his GNP attack.  Off of his back Gates was machine gunning his submission attempts and he was able to sink in an armbar for the tapout victory at 2:55 of round one.

Thad Handrick faced Nick Vigilanese.  Handrick got an early takedown and was working his GNP until an illegal 12-6 elbow from Handrick halted the bout and brought the fighters back to standing.  After the restart Handrick got another takedown but had to defend an inverted triangle choke attempt until the round ended.  Round two saw Handrick with another takedown and working his GNP attack until Vigilanese landed an illegal up-kick  and was assessed a one point penalty.  Vigilanese landed a good head kick to end the round.  Round three saw Vigilanese landing his strongest kicks of the match, but Handrick again drove for and got the takedown.  The rest of the fight had Handricks working GNP and submission attempts and Vigilanese defending.  The scores were tallied and the winner by way of majority decision was Thad Handrick.

Daniel Guzman faced James De Herrera.  Guzman showed good striking early while De Herrera scored multiple takedowns; but Guzman was able to twice work back to his feet.  Round two had
De Herrera getting a takedown, but the action stopped when he took an illegal knee to the back of the head.  After the restart De Herrera again shot for and got the takedown and during a scramble for position he trapped the arm of Guzman and De Herrera got the tapout win at 2:30 of round two.

Ryan Isham faced Esteban Ramos.  The majority of round one had Ramos trying for a takedown while Isham defended and worked knees in the clinch.  Ramos got a takedown early in the second round, but the action slowed and after the referee stood the fighters the rest of the round was fought in the clinch with Isham landing knees while Ramos worked to again take it to the mat. Round three had an early clinch then Isham got a double leg takedown into side control.  From there he worked his GNP while Ramos tried to set in a triangle choke, then an armbar.  Isham escaped, passed guard and worked his GNP to end the bout.  The decision was an unanimous one in favor of Isham.

JJ Aldrich faced Kristen Fatta in an women's Muay Thai match.  Round one saw each fighter with very crisp techniques mixing their punches and kicks well.  Round two had more even exchanges early until Fatta indicated she had  jaw injury.  The action was momentarily stopped and it was determined that the bout could continue.  The rest of the round was punctuated with head kicks as well as a spinning back fist by Aldrich.  Round three started with strong action from both fighters but Aldrich pushed the action  and landed solid punches from range including another spinning back fist and strong knees in the clinch. Fatta indicated she could not continue and at 1:13 of the third round the win went to Aldrich by way of TKO.

"Of the night" moments:

Debut of the night goes to JJ Aldrich.  She had exceptionally crisp technique for a first timer in the cage and after letting the crowd know that she is just 17 years old it was announced that she wants to fight MMA as soon as she is 18.

KO/TKO of the night goes to Travis Hollis for his nonstop fight ending GNP flurry.

Submission of the night goes to Nathan Gates for his rapid fire transitions and multiple submission attempts before getting the armbar set in to win the bout with just 5 seconds left in the first round.

Fight of the night goes to Matt Cox and Tambora Gerl for their three rounds of action that kept the crowd thoroughly entertained and continuously wondering who was finally going to get the upper hand.
