"Battle of Champions"
Written by J.R. Gordon

In the midst of a threatening spring snowstorm the Colorado MMA fans came out in force to watch the Rocky Mountain Bad Boys, "Battle of the Champions" show.  The event played out at Red and Jerry's event center in Sheridan Colorado April 23, 2010.  With two professional bouts, two title matches and one fight in the women's division the fans had all that they could ask for.

Main event: Cruz Chacon vs Chino Montoya in a 175 lb. professional bout.  Early in the first round Montoya was able to push Chacon into the cage, from there he began an attack of knee strikes and foot stomps that lasted for half of the round.  For the second half of the round Chacon began to land low kicks when outside as well as knee strikes of his own when clinched.  Round two saw Chacon continue with his leg kick attack and Montoya focusing on punches.  Montoya got a leg trip takedown and on the ground Chacon threatened with submission while holding Montoya in tight to slow his GNP game.  The referee tapped the fighters to bring them to standing and at that moment Chacon landed an accidental strike to the back of the head of Montoya.  When the action resumed Chacon landed more leg kicks before jumping guard and taking the fight to the mat.  Both fighters threw strikes from the ground to end the round.  Round three saw Chacon stay committed to his leg kicking game plan  before again pulling guard.  The referee stood the fighters when the action slowed and Chacon landed his strongest punch flurry of the night visibly stunning Montoya.  Montoya however weathered the barrage and Chacon elected to pull guard from the clinch.  The referee again stood the fighters and each landed strikes before Chacon pulled guard one last time.  Montoya ended the round working to finish with a Darce choke while Chacon landed body punches until the bell ended the round.  The judges turned in their tallies for the bout and the winner by way of split decision was Cruz Chacon.

Steve Granieri vs Travis Coyle in a 165 lb. professional bout.  Granieri opened with a fast shoot after throwing a leg kick and Coyle countered by jumping to standing guard and cinching in a tight standing guillotine choke.  Coyle was able to close off the choke for the tapout victory at :23 of round one.

Abe Alvarado vs Randal Schuckman for the Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz 125 lb. elimination title.  Each fighter displayed good strikes before Alvarado got a takedown.  Off of his back Schuckman threatened with a triangle choke, then an armbar.  After effecting his escapes Alvarado scrambled to back control and flurried with a GNP attack that got him the title winning TKO victory at 2:20 of round one.

Jason Lee vs Bobby Kpa  for the Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz 185 lb. elimination title.  Both fighters came out striking with Lee able to get a takedown off of the cage.  Kpa worked for a guillotine choke that Lee escaped.  As the fighters scrambled to standing Lee set in a guillotine choke of his own and he was able to lock it in and win the title by way of tapout at 2:21 of round one.

Jocelyn Gutterrez vs  Amy Wren.  The fighters came out and stood toe-to-toe with Gutterrez landing mainly punches and Wren working knee strikes.  Wren initiated a takedown, but Gutterrez landed in full mount and flurried with GNP.  Wren was able to escape and come back to standing and the fighters traded hard punches to end the round.  Round two again saw both fighters landing strong punches until Gutterrez was able to stun Wren.  Gutterrez recognized her opportunity and closed in with a flurry of punches that got here the TKO win at 1:10 of round two.

Emanuel Martinez vs  Shawn Zemlicka.  Martinez pressed the action early with strong leg kicks and punches before Zemlicka landed an accidental low blow.  The referee called time for Martinez to recover and when the fight resumed Martinez pressed forward with strikes until the round ended.  Round two began with Martinez rushing forward with strikes but Zemlicka got the clinch and landed strong knees, however, one of them was illegally to the head so the referee stopped the action and Zemlicka was penalized one point.  When the action resumed Zemlicka closed out the round with a takedown.  Round three saw Zemlicka come out with aggression including a flurry that ended with a glancing head kick.  Zemlicka kept the pressure on and landed a solid head kick that knocked down Martinez.  Zemlicka closed in for GNP strikes and got the TKO win at :43 of round three.

Adrian Prospero vs Anthony Werner.  Both fighters landed early strikes with Werner able to clinch then get a takedown.  While falling to guard Prospero set in a tight guillotine choke for the tapout victory at 1:26 of round one.

Pete Alvarado vs Allen Washington.  Alvarado got an early takedown and he controlled position and landed GNP for the rest of the round.  Round two had Alvarado looking for another takedown that Washingtom sprawled out of.  Washington then pulled guard and set in a tight guillotine choke.  At :51 of round one Alvarado lost consciousness and the referee stopped the bout giving the submission win to Allen Washington.

"Of the night" moments:

Chin of the night goes to Jocelyn Gutterrez and Amy Wren for the multiple punches that each withstood from the other.

Heart of the night goes to Pete Alvarado for refusing to tap to the choke that eventually rendered him unconscious.

Submission of the night goes to Travis Coyle for his jumping guard into the fight winning guillotine choke.

KO/TKO of the night goes to Shawn Zemlicka for his head kick that set up his GNP to get the win.

Fight of the night goes to Cruz Chacon and Chino Montoya for their back and forth battle that went all three rounds and was close enough that the judges saw it as a split decision.

Thank you so much to the sponsors for making this event possible.

Best in Health and Training,
J.R. Gordon
